Cattle Crush

A number of issues to take into account when buying a cattle crush:

1. THE FLOOR OF THE CATTLE CRUSH

The floor of the cattle crush must not be slippery and should make as little as possible noise. A steel floor is therefore not a good solution, because steel is slippery and makes quite a lot of noise. With a rubber mat on top the slipperiness and noise will be reduced. For wood applies that it is almost free from noise, but an important disadvantage is that it can become slippery in certain circumstances. The best solution for a floor of your cattle crush is an impregnated soft floor (which ensures a longer lifespan), optionally provided with a rubber mat. Therefore, all our crushes, with the exception of one, are equipped with this type of floor. Only the SA0051 box has an aluminum base with vulcanized rubber, so that the SA0051 also meets the same requirements.

2. THE FRONT GATE OF THE CATTLE CRUSH

A front gate of a cattle crush should be able to easily fasten all animals, without having to adjust the gate. The American system for this only works if all cows have the same size. A better option is a front gate which can be put in a catching position, an option that allows to fasten all animals from large to small. An additional advantage is that it works much calmer and the cow will get less scared. This gate has 2 types, a gate through which the cattle passes and a gate to drive back the cattle. All cattle crushes of Wopa are provided with these types of gates, both those of farmers as those of professional hoof trimmers.

3. THE WINCH DRIVING GEAR OF THE CATTLE CRUSH

When you trim a few animals, it is possible to choose for a hand winch. This winch should have a haulage of at least 1 : 2, so that the rotation becomes easier. Also, it should be a braked winch without pawl, so that repercussion is always prevented. If there are plans to trim all cows in the future, it is important to choose a crush with good motors, which can always be mounted later on if desired. Or, if you are certain that all cows will be done, it is better to choose for our hydraulic model. This model is much more reliable and has the advantage that the tailgate can also be operated hydraulically, which facilitates the fastening of the cows.

4. FIXATION OF THE HIND LEG IN THE CATTLE CRUSH
With a good hind leg fixation, there will remain some free space around the hoof, which improves the view on the hoof and allows the trimmer to stand with his back towards the cow while trimming. In this way one can better see if the hoof is plane. Also, the leg should be able to be turned up high enough to avoid that one has to stoop. In all our hoof care boxes this space is included by default and the cutting edge of the hoof is brought in an as flat as possible position, which simplifies the cutting.

5. FIXATION OF THE FRONT LEGS IN THE CATTLE CRUSH
In order to fasten the front legs, it is important that the leg is put on a block that supports the hoof. All our boxes are therefore equipped with such a block. If you do not choose an electric or hydraulic solution, we recommend using the front leg support that comes with a winch.

6. CONSTRUCTION OF THE CATTLE CRUSH

For the construction of a cattle crush one can choose between two types, a rigid or a flexible construction. In the case of the flexible construction, it is possible to move the crush due to the several separate parts of which the box consists. When the cow is located in the box it is possible to see the box moving. The box does this now but will still do so in 30 years (we have over 40 years of experience). We have constructed the majority of our boxes in this way, because it offers an enormous weight reduction and therefore makes the box easier to displace. Our SA0051 is the only rigid box, and is carried out directly much more heavily.

7. OPTIONS FOR A CATTLE CRUSH
It is desirable that a cattle crush can be easily expanded with extra options in the future. Therefore, all of our boxes normally have the ability to be expanded with different options, also years after the box has been purchased.
